Musicologist Dr. Katherine Brandt has been offered the chance of a lifetime: to travel to Bonn, Germany to study Beethoven’s manuscripts first hand. Despite the misgivings of her daughter Clara, she refuses to allow her deteriorating health to deter her. As she looks through the archives she attempts to sort out a question that has fascinated musicians, musicologists, and fans for centuries: why did Beethoven spend so much time in the last decade of his life writing variations on a simple waltz by Anton Diabelli? As Dr. Brandt struggles with her health and the mysteries of the past, we see Beethoven’s contemporaries struggling to understand his motives as well, as the master writes not one, but thirty-three brilliant variations.
